God Jul (Merry Christmas), I'm currently sitting at John and Ingrid's house and the Christmas festivities have all died down for the moment. I had originally planned to stay here for only a few short days before going back to Zealand but I have run into a bitter sweet predicament that I didn't quite plan for. The Immigration Service had sent John and Ingrid a letter on the 15th of December and - since the letter was in my name - John decided to wait until I arrived in Esbjerg on the 23rd to open it. I arrived in Esbjerg at [View Full Entry]

I haven't written in the blog for the last few weeks but the reasoning for that is fairly simple...things haven't really changed all that much. Besides the Christmas festivites here at Svanholm (Christmas trees, small parties, a large Christmas festival - similar to the farmers market back home) things are still the same. I work from 8-3 and learn Danish and hang out here. Then to Copenhagen and Roskilde on the weekends. At the moment it isn't really a nice time to go touring around Europe so I'm having loads of fun just staying here and partying with the Svanholm gang. [View Full Entry]

Tout le monde, It's the start of my third week at Svanholm and fortunately for myself things are going just great! The work is comfortable, I have some great friends at the farm, and the chances of getting that tourist visa are looking better and better. My weekdays are fairly simple, I get up at 7:30, I start work at 8:00, I have lunch in the main kitchen (prepared for us by a small army of cooks) at 12:00 and am off by 3:00. After 3:00 I usually hang out with my friends at Svanholm and play video games or learn [View Full Entry]

Response

Just writing this message in response to a few questions. SO! First I should point out that the idea to get an apartment in Copenhagen is simply an idea, not something that I am seriously considering. Remember, when you're in a foreign country things work at a snails pace, especially when the country you are staying in has a government that is leaning against increased immigration (ie, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy...etc.) So first of all you have to apply for a work visa or some type of extension. If you're an electronic engineer or a doctor you can get a [View Full Entry]

Tout le monde, Mickelsen Family, Sorry that I haven't written in awhile. The last week has been really busy and TONS of fun! I'm currently staying at a large commune about 50km north of Copenhagen and working as a volunteer with the building group. At first I was fairly lonely since Danish people are quite shy and I didn't really understand how the farm functioned. Now that I've been here for a week, I now have some really good friends and I am always free to be as private or as social as I want. Anyway. This weekend I met some [View Full Entry]

I'm just sitting at the bed and breakfast in Roskilde and I thought I would write this message mainly to let my parents know that everything is going just fine since I forgot to call last night. The family has been so nice to me here I didn't think it would be right to bug them to use their telephone to make an international call. I'll call you next Sunday once the people at Svanholm start to know me. The past week has been a little on the dry side but it did have its moments. When people in Germany said [View Full Entry]

Lucky Me!

Europe » Denmark » Region Syddanmark » Odense
So we called the bus station today and someone did drop off my wallet with everything inside. The cash, the visa, the debit...everything! I couldn't be more relieved. Only in Denmark I guess :) Today I spent the day working in the garden planting garlic for about 6 hours. The ecovillage asks that you work 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, in order to compensate for your room and board. Although it may seem like a lot, in return I not only stay for free but also learn the language, experience the culture and meet new people. It's a [View Full Entry]

Hundstrup

Europe » Denmark » Region Syddanmark » Odense
I'm currently visiting an ecovillage in central Denmark near the town of Hundstrup. Unfornately for me I believe (I can't be 100% sure) that I forgot my wallet on the bus when I switched busses about 2 km away from the town. Luckily for me I'm in the countryside so I will call the bus tomorrow and someone may have turned it in. Otherwise I will likely have to wait for a visa from Canada. Not to worry though, visa transactions have been stopped and at the most I lose around 200 in cash. It doesn't bother me all that much [View Full Entry]

Tonight is my last night with John and Ingrid. Tomorrow I will be taking the train to Svenborg and then the bus to Ubølle to visit and ecovillage north of this town. As for my time here, John and Ingrid have been just perfect hosts. They have fed me frikadela and rye bread up to my ears! I've never eaten so much in all my life. John took me to visit Ribe and the island of Rømø. He laughed when I was in Ribe because I went to the same bakery, ordered the same pastry and walked down the same street [View Full Entry]

I just arrived in Denmark today and I have to say I'm fairly tired from the train trip. All in all I was on the train for 8 hours but John Mikkelsen was there to meet me at the station in Esbjerg which worked out just perfectly. This evening we had Trina and Peter over for dinner as well as Trina's husband Peter (I guess Peter is a fairly common name?). Tomorrow we will be going to a fairly medieval city nearby to do a small tour and then I will be going with John's son Peter to a pub in [View Full Entry]
